Teaching your puppy where to go to the toilet is one of the first and most important things you’ll do as a new dog owner. The best way to succeed is by creating a consistent routine and sticking to it every day.
Puppies learn at different speeds. Some may understand toilet training within a few weeks, while others take longer. Accidents are a normal part of the learning process, even for puppies who pick things up quickly.

Take your puppy outside as soon as they wake up. Encourage them to toilet in the garden or designated outdoor area. In the early stages, using a lead can help prevent them from getting distracted and wandering off instead of focusing on the task.

Puppies usually need to go to the toilet shortly after eating. Taking them outside soon after meals can help prevent accidents indoors. You should also take them outside after naps, as well as after periods of excitement or play.
When your puppy goes to the toilet outside, reward them immediately with praise and a small treat. This helps them understand that they have done the right thing.
Positive reinforcement encourages puppies to repeat behaviours that earn rewards, making it more likely they will choose to toilet outside in the future.
Never punish your puppy for going to the toilet inside the house. Puppies don’t have accidents deliberately; it simply means they were not taken outside in time.
Instead, clean the area thoroughly and continue following the routine. This helps prevent lingering smells that might attract your puppy back to the same spot.
