Our research has found more than half of Irish pet owners are still grieving more than a year after their pet’s passing, which highlights the need for greater recognition of pet bereavement and ensure grieving owners know where to turn for support.
The survey of almost 500 pet owners across Ireland found that 99% said losing their pet felt like losing a family member. Almost eight in ten described the experience as extremely difficult, while 62% said they were still grieving more than a year after their pet’s death.
In response to the findings, we have launched a dedicated pet loss section on our website and introduced a freephone number (1800 83 9954), ensuring anyone in Ireland can access confidential pet loss support, practical advice and bereavement resources.
The survey also highlights the wider impact of pet bereavement, with 44% of respondents saying they had taken time away from work, education or other responsibilities following their loss, demonstrating that the death of a pet can affect every aspect of a person’s daily life.
Dr Laura Mock, Head of Veterinary Services, explained: “One of the saddest things we hear is that owners feel they have to grieve in silence because they worry others won’t understand. This was backed up by the survey finding that only one in four pet owners felt their grief was fully understood by others.
For many people, the death of a pet is every bit as devastating as losing a family member. We hope this new freephone number reassures people that they don’t have to go through that grief alone.”
Rick O’Shea, Radio Presenter and Broadcaster continued: “Our family has three adopted dogs, and I try not to think about having to say goodbye to them, but sadly it’s something almost everyone with a pet will face one day. As a nation, we’re generally not great at talking about our feelings, so it doesn’t surprise me that people don’t feel their loss is fully understood. For some, there can be the worry that what they’re feeling isn’t normal, which is why the Pet Loss Support Helpline is so valuable. The trained volunteers are there to listen and support people, during what can be one of the most difficult times in their life.”
The confidential Pet Loss Support service is available every day from 8.30am to 8.30pm on 1800 83 9954.
